Montréal (Québec) December 16, 2003 – 8D Technologies Inc. and Cale Systems, the North American subsidiary of Swedish multi-national Cale Access AB, announced today the delivery for installation on Montreal streets of a significant number of leading-edge parking payment terminals. The terminals are equipped with the 8D ECOtm transactional module, a proprietary technology, which allows for secure electronic payment in real time via wireless communication. The solar powered terminals are also totally autonomous from the power grid thanks to 8D ECO’s advanced power management capacities.

The SCSM (Société en commandite Stationnement de Montreal), which manages metered parking for the City of Montreal, conducted field tests on city parking lots with 8D ECO equipped terminals during the summer of 2003. Following the success of the initial testing process, SCSM is now installing street units in the downtown area, as part of Phase II of its pilot project. SCSM has selected these computerised terminals to validate the use of new technologies on its territory.

Pay & Go concept

With this new technology, a driver parks his automobile in any available space, notes the number of the specific space and goes to the terminal to pay for the required time; he can then walk away with the stub with no need to return to display it on the vehicle. As part of the 8D ECO solution, parking officers are instantly provided with the payment status of all surrounding parking spaces through a handheld computer (Palm type) accessing the system by wireless communication.

Through online wireless communication, the terminals also allow secure payment with credit cards – besides cash of course – substantially reducing losses due to expired of falsified cards. The integrated 8D ECO solution acts as a comprehensive parking payment and management system allowing full control and constant monitoring of all aspects of operations and total access to relevant information at all levels.

This technology can be adapted to an unlimited number of automated point-of-sale applications that require diversified modes of payment and real-time wireless communication.
